Storing pies in the freezer is such a helpful way to prepare them ahead of time or simply enjoy your leftovers later on. We all know how hectic the holidays can be, so I am always looking for ways to make the big day extra easy (especially if I am the one hosting!)

Believe it or not, there is a right and wrong way when it comes to storing your desserts in the freezer. In this article, I am going to show you exactly how to keep your sweet potato pie in the freezer so that it stays nice and fresh!

Can You Freeze Sweet Potato Pie

Yep! Sweet potato pie can easily be frozen. However, for best results, you need to make sure that you are properly storing it as well as enjoying it within the recommended amount of time.

Whether you’re a pro at hosting Thanksgiving dinner and holiday parties or giving it a try for the first time this year, you’re sure to find my ultimate guide to planning Thanksgiving a help! Don’t forget to safely thaw your holiday turkey early too!

Freezing Before vs After Baking

You have a few options when it comes to freezing sweet potato pie. First of all, you can freeze a completely baked sweet potato pie. Secondly, you can freeze the sweet potato filling separately from the crust. Finally, you can freeze an assembled and unbaked pie.

Of course, if you are freezing leftovers, your pie has already been baked. However, if you are preparing your pie in advance, you will actually have the best results (and freshest tasting pie) if you either freeze it before baking or freeze the filling separately!

How To Freeze Sweet Potato Pie

If your pie has been baked, make sure to allow it to cool completely before you prepare it to be stored. In fact, if it still has some warmth, the steam will become trapped and cause ice crystals as well as a soggy crust.

  • Plastic wrap. Wrap your sweet potato pie in several layers of plastic wrap.Foil. Then, wrap the pie in a layer of heavy-duty aluminum foil.Date. Label and date your pie (so you know how long it is good for).Freeze. Place it into the freezer.

If you are freezing just the sweet potato filling, you can place it into a freezer-safe storage bag. Then, squeeze out all of the excess air then pop it into the freezer.

How To Thaw Sweet Potato Pie

To thaw your sweet potato pie, simply remove both the foil and the plastic wrap and then transfer it from the freezer to the fridge the night before you intend to serve it. Once the pie is completely thawed, you can move it to the kitchen counter and allow it to come up to room temperature (or you can just serve it cold).

If desired, you can always pop it in the oven at 325°F (160°C) for 15 minutes (once thawed) to bring back the original texture.

Do not move your sweet potato pie straight from the freezer to the counter. This quick temperature change can cause the pie to ‘weep’ and make the crust soggy.

How Long Can Sweet Potato Pie Be Frozen

Enjoy your frozen pie within 3 months for the best results. In fact, the pie can be stored for longer than 3 months, but the taste may begin to deteriorate.

Tips For Freezing Sweet Potato Pie

  • Use a disposable aluminum pan for best results. The thin layer of the pan allows the pie to freeze faster, thus lowering the likelihood of ice crystals forming. It could take 2-3 hours for your baked pie to come to room temperature. Don’t wrap it before it has completely cooled!Slowly thaw your pie by placing it into the fridge. If you place it directly on the counter your pie may get a soggy crust.
