❤️ Why You’ll Love This Recipe! Amazingly tasty! The tangy flavor of sourdough bread combines with a rich, eggy, maple syrup coating - it’s a perfect balance of flavors! Quick & easy breakfast! This staple of weekend breakfasts is actually a pretty fast meal to make, so you can serve it up any day of the week! Suitable for special occasions! Make this a special Mother’s Day brunch or birthday breakfast! 🥘 Ingredients These are all of my favorite ingredients for making a rich and delicious French toast, no matter what kind of bread I have on hand! Eggs - to make this delicious eggy bread, the eggs are pretty important!Milk - makes your egg mixture thinned out to spread evenly over your sourdough bread slices!Maple Syrup - it doesn’t matter what you’re serving this luscious French toast with, a touch of maple syrup makes the whole breakfast taste amazing!Vanilla - just a little drizzle of vanilla extract to highlight all of the wonderfully rich flavors featured in this tasty French toast! Use vanilla bean paste to make it just that little bit more extra special!Cinnamon - is a must-have for this amazing breakfast or brunch! It adds warmth and depth of flavor that is irresistible!Nutmeg - is a personal favorite, and I always have whole nutmeg on hand to freshly grate into something spectacular like this!Salt - to balance out the sweetness and also highlight and enhance the already amazing flavors of your sourdough French toast!Butter - for more reason than one! Yes, to top off your French toast when serving, but it also makes a difference in flavor if you use the butter for frying your French toast!Sourdough Bread - some wonderfully tangy sliced sourdough bread to make the breakfast complete! Be sure to see the free printable recipe card below for ingredients, exact amounts & instructions with tips! 🔪 Step-By-Step Instructions Making your French toast is a very simple process! The one thing that I like to be sure of is that whatever dish I’m using for my egg mixture easily fits my sliced bread for complete and easy dipping. Process steps 1-6. Combine the egg mixture ingredients in a dish. Add the eggs, milk, maple syrup, vanilla extract, cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg then mix until well combined.Heat your non-stick frying pan or skillet over medium heat while you coat the bread slices. Place the first slice of bread into the egg mixture.Flip and coat the second side of the bread.Add butter and allow it to melt before adding your first slice of sourdough bread.Place the first sourdough bread slice into your heated skillet and cook for 2 - 3 minutes or until golden.Flip and cook the second side for an additional 2 - 3 minutes.Remove from heat and serve immediately. Serve drizzled with more maple syrup, some fresh blueberry syrup, strawberry coulis, or slathered with your favorite jam or jelly! Enjoy!
💭 Angela’s Tips & Recipe Notes
To avoid SOGGY French toast, be sure to flip and coat the sourdough bread slices quickly. Some types of bread absorb the liquids super fast, which will result in soggy bread. Sourdough doesn’t seem to be as quick to absorb, but I still recommend moving through the process quickly for the best results. You can omit the cinnamon and nutmeg if desired, or swap out different sweeteners like honey. Try a different extract flavoring. Almond extract is amazing when you top your French toast with whipped cream and fresh fruit! To keep your cooked sourdough French toast slices warm, you can place them onto a baking sheet and keep them in a warm oven at 250ºF (121ºC) until all of your French toast is ready to serve.
🥡 Storing & Reheating
To store in the refrigerator or freezer, stack your french toast with a square of wax paper or parchment paper between the slices. Then wrap the stack of french toast with aluminum foil securely.
Store in the fridge for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
The easiest way to reheat this classic breakfast is to pop your slices in the toaster. You can, of course, heat them in the microwave as well.
However, heat the leftover French toast carefully and just enough to enjoy them before overcooking. You don’t want chewy, rubbery toast!
